ASTA member Lorriane Darwin has been awarded the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), one of the highest honors in the United States for excellence in teaching mathematics for the state of Arkansas. Darwin is a math teacher at Cabot High School. Ms. Darwin was selected by a national committee composed of prominent mathematicians, scientists, mathematics/science educators, and past recipients. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. In addition to state and national prestige, winners of the award receive a cash prize and a visit to Washington, D.C. to meet the President, key congressional members and education officials. The PAEMST was enacted by Congress in 1983 for the President to bestow up to 108 awards each year to recognize teachers for their contributions to education, student learning and their ability to progress students in mathematics and science. Anyone may nominate exceptional math or science teachers, including principals, teachers, parents, students, or members of the general public. Darwin was nominated by her then-principal, Zanya Clarkson, in 2008. “Most teachers don’t go out looking for awards that are available to them. We are too busy with the day-to-day of providing education to our students. I am honored that my principal chose to nominate me for this award. It has been a great experience,” said Darwin. ASTA is proud to honor Lorraine Darwin and all our members for their support and dedication to the students of Arkansas.
