This fall, ASTA awarded Ms. Ann Avey, a sixth grade social studies teacher and ASTA member, a grant to promote the principles of volunteerism for her students at Beebe Middle School.

On Thursday, December 9th, the All-American Badgers of Beebe Middle School participated in a special volunteer program in their community.

Approximately 135 students were organized into groups, picking from a list of many volunteer activities. Students focused on helping senior citizens by raking leaves, serving lunch (with Bingo), and decorating doors for Christmas. Other groups made goody bags for firefighters and policemen while other students mentored younger students.

Students were also asked to bring canned goods to make food baskets. Four baskets were collected and distributed through McRae City Hall.

McRae Mayer Bob Sullivan and State Representative Jonathan Dismang were in attendance and spoke to the students before their volunteer activities began. Mayor Sullivan thanked the students for their work and dedication. Representative Dismang handed out U.S. flags to students.

Approximately 800 volunteer hours were served in the community. Congratulations to Ms. Avey for organizing such a wonderful event.
