New Charter Schools Coming to Arkansas

So far this year, fourteen different organizations have sent the Arkansas Department of Education letters of intent to open 37 new charter schools across the state. These groups want to open independently run, publicly chartered schools in the 2012-13 school year. The final application deadline for opening a charter school is August 30.

These letters are the first to be submitted for open-enrollment charter schools since a state law that capped the number of new school from 24 was revised.

Education Department spokesman Seth Blomeley told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that officials are trying to determine how many new charter schools they can approve for 2012-13. Seventeen have been approved for the 2011-12 year so far.

One charter provider, Lighthouse Academics, which operates a school in Jacksonville, intends to apply for a new charter before the August deadline.

What are your thoughts on the influx on charters in the state?
