Each week, ASTA brings its members a round-up of what’s happening in education. From big, eye-catching headlines to the stories most papers overlook, we find the news our members really want to see. This week, school shootings and the flu continue to worry, while some celebrate school choice.

Kentucky Shooting Latest of 11 so Far this School Year: The nation was rocked this week by the news of a massacre at a Kentucky school that killed 2 students and injured many more. As the community attempts to recover, attention is turning to the larger implications for the country. The school shooting was the 50th of the 2017-2018 school year and the 11th to occur since January 1st, leading many to worry that with violence becoming so prevalent in our schools that the public will eventually become inured to it.

A Deadly Flu Season Rocks Schools Across the Country: A particularly virulent strain of the flu is making its way across the country this flu season causing heightened alertness across the country. The flu has proved fatal this year, affecting both students and teachers. The close quarters in schools make them especially prevalent to the spread of the disease and with this year’s strain, many have had to close. In some cases, whole districts have cancelled classes to try and prevent the continued spread of the disease.

National School Choice Week Advocates for Student and Teacher School Choice: National School Choice Week (NSCW), which is being observed this week, is the largest celebration of choice in education, encompassing all forms of school choice including public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, online academies, and home education. NSCW president Andrew Campanella believes that since all children are different, parents should be able to find the environment that best suits their child, while school choice opponents worry that the movement will lead to increased segregation and school inequities. ASTA and its national partner AAE signs on to NSCW every year because we believe that education should work for the students involved and because increased choice provides increased options for teachers as well.
