Each week, ASTA brings its members a round-up of what’s happening in education. From big, eye-catching headlines to the stories most papers overlook, we find the news our members really want to see. This week, we look at bus safety, record low math scores, mandatory police interaction training, and more!

Rough Week for School Bus Safety: Next week is National School Bus Safety Week, and it seems to be needed now more than ever. More and more, incidents involving school busses are making the news. The week is supposed to remind the public of how they can behave safely around school busses. A new video shows how one driver acted with blatant disregard for school bus safety measures. The video shows a vehicle leaving the road and zooming around the school bus on the shoulder, nearly colliding with a student as she exits the bus.

ACT Math Scores Drop to Record Low: The ACT released the latest round of scores this week, showing a marked decline in math scores. The average math score in 2018 was 20.5, down from a high of 21.1 in 2012 and the lowest average math score on the test in the past twenty years. Only 4 in 10 students who took the ACT met the benchmark set as being ready for college-level work. Some are calling out the scores as a red flag for education in our country.

New Texas Graduation Requirement: Police Interaction Training: The growing number of fatal police shootings has many in this country concerned. Now, Texas is trying to protect its students by requiring them to be trained on how to interact with police before graduation. The class, called “Civilian Interaction Training Program,” consists mainly of a 16 minute video that walks students through what might happen if they are stopped by the police. There is also a guide for teachers on how to facilitate discussion around the video.
