Common Core State Standards: What a School Should Look Like

There is no doubt that the shift to Common Core will bring about a change in not only how instruction is delivered, but also in the way schools operate. In order to meet some of the goals of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), schools will have to shift some of their practices. Individual schools will approach the challenges differently, but there are some universal changes that good schools should implement.

Storybird – This is such a great tool. Available in both free and pay versions, this website allows you and your students to create picture books with relative ease. Have younger students? They'll love selecting art from all the available options and watching their story come alive. Teach an art class? Your students can upload and share their own art. Seriously, the true potential of this tool is endless.
 
Teacher Excellence Support System (TESS)

Based on Charlotte Danielson's 2011 edition of "A Framework for Teaching," teachers, administrators and your ASTA staff are preparing for the 2013-2014 statewide pilot of Arkansas' new teacher (and other certified areas) evaluation system, the Teacher Excellence Support System or TESS. ASTA staff are attending TESS training so that we can be a source of support and assistance to members and schools as we anticipate many questions and requests for assistance. Training across the state for administrators, school- appointed teacher trainers, and teachers intensifies over the next several months.

One of the things that stood out among the data released in the recent MetLife survey, was that teachers who collaborate professionally with other teachers are more likely to seek out leadership roles and are more likely to be satisfied with their position.  This information points out yet another reason that having a high-quality professional learning community (PLC) is essential to teaching.

Technology is fundamental to our global progress. The forward charge of digital resources has forever altered how we communicate with each other and how we conduct our daily lives. Students are tethered to their iPads, smartphones, and laptops, while chalkboards, textbooks, and overhead projectors have become relics of the past. As educators, we must work to ensure that our students are prepared for our current digital world and, more importantly, the days yet to come.
