Do Girls Hate STEM Classes?

I’ll admit it: as a student, I loathed math and science.  In fact, one of the determining factors in selecting my college major was how little math and science was required to get my degree.  I also figured that I had enough trouble solving my own problems as a college freshman without having to solve x’s problems, too.  Besides, as an aspiring professional violinist, I was engrossed in practicing music, oblivious to the fact that math, science, and music significantly overlap.  In my sage adulthood, I now realize that I didn’t hate math and science – I just hated how it was taught to me.

Little Rock, AR – The Arkansas State Teachers Association (ASTA), the state's premier non-union, professional educator association, is pleased to welcome Dr. Michele Ballentine-Linch as its new executive director. Serving in education for over twenty years, Dr. Linch brings a wealth of experience as a veteran educator, teacher leadership director, professor, and charter school board president. In her new role, Dr. Linch will focus on promoting the non-union education association option in Arkansas by spearheading recruitment efforts, overseeing member services and professional development, and developing strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations.

Mr. Flowers brings a wealth of experience as a veteran teacher and leader in the Bentonville area. In his new role, Mr. Flowers will focus on promoting the non-union option in Arkansas by spearheading recruitment efforts in his region, overseeing programs, and serving individual members.

First Day of School Activities

Welcome to August, Teachers!  With the first day of school right around the corner, you are likely making preparations for the lesson plan that will kick-off your entire school year.  The first day of school is more about planning than it is about teaching, and it’s particularly important to spend some time introducing your subject and getting to know your students.  Depending on your subject and age group, consider using some of these activities to help start your year off right.
 
ASTA Board Member Pens Scholarly Paper on E.S.L. Education

ASTA Board Member Tracye Todd recently penned a scholarly education article about E.S.L education for the Clute Institute. Entitled, "Strategies for Improving Academic Performance by Non-Native English Speakers in Graduate Programs," Ms. Todd examines the trends of non-native English speakers in higher education. She currently teaches at El Dorado High School and is working on her doctorate in curriculum and instruction. Congratulations!
