The Decline of Textbooks

Teachers in the classroom today all remember being issued their textbooks in grade school year after year. Decades old charts and graphs accompanied by the occasional pencil drawing have been standard issue for generations. Currently the textbook business is a $4 billion-a-year industry; however, with dawn of new technologies and new insight into their true effectiveness, paper textbooks are on the fast track to possible extinction.
 
School Shooting Rocks Ohio Community

Just days after a new federal report was released highlighting the decline in violent crimes in schools, tragedy struck a community outside of Cleveland, Ohio, when a high school student opened fire on his classmates in the Chardon High School cafeteria yesterday morning. While several students remain in critical condition, currently three students remain hospitalized and two students have died as a result of close range gunshot wounds.
 
New Report: Violent Crimes Decline in Public Schools

Violent crimes in public schools have been a hot topic in the American discourse for years. From Columbine to Virginia Tech, communities have realized that violent incidents can strike anywhere. Just this past January, Education Matters featured a story on the warning signs of school violence for educators. Although violence in schools remains a threat, a new report illustrates that violent crimes in the nation's schools have declined in recent years, while cyber bulling and youth suicides have risen.
 
Great American Teach Off Awarding $10,000 Grant

Over the past few years, education reform has been a hot topic nearly nationwide. While the examination of our system is prudent  it is critical to recognize the amazing work our educators are doing across the country. For the second year in a row, GOOD and University of Phoenix are launching The Great American Teach-Off—a nationwide competition that will identify classroom heroes and reward one with a $10,000 grant to use towards his or her classroom.
