Expanded School Days Gain Popularity

One of the most debated aspects of school reform has been the issue of the traditional school schedule. Currently, most of the country operates on the traditional short, five-day school week with summers off, a system largely based on a century's old calendar that has little significance for the majority of American students. As reformers seek to find a schedule that works, many have argued for school week models that not only add instructional time, but do so based on the highest student need.
 
Study Outlines Teach For America Retention Rates

Teach for America (TFA), a non-profit organization that recruits recent college graduates and professionals to teach in high-need schools for two years, has become one of the most well known and prestigious alternative certification programs in the country since 1990. While many studies have attributed student successes to TFA members and programs, little has been compiled about TFA retention rates and their impact on the high-need schools they teach in. As TFA enters into its biggest year yet, Phi Delta Kappa this week released a comprehensive study on how long TFA participants teach, and the patterns associated with participating in this unique program.
 
Obama’s Speech to Schools Stresses Student Success and Jobs Bill

On the heels of introducing another jobs package that includes billion for education, President Obama addressed the nation's students in a telecast yesterday from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Washington, D.C. While this is the third time President Obama has addressed students in a back-to-school speech, the motivational talk took a political turn in advocating for his billion-dollar proposals to hire more teachers and increase school infrastructure spending.

We are regularly reminded that our students are 21st century learners. We know that we need to be infusing them with 21st century skills. And don't forget that all of this is because the 21st century job market and 21st century technology demand a different kind of worker, a different kind of thinking. But here is a little food for thought: who is teaching these little digital natives? Obviously, we the teachers have a good hand in that education. So how would you rate yourself as a 21st century educator?
 
ASTA Member on KNWA Discussing MATHCOUNTS

The Arkansas State Teachers Association has again partnered with MATHCOUNTS to provide grants to math teachers to participate in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Program. In an effort to get the word out, both ASTA member, Ronnie Flowers, and MATHCOUNTS Arkansas Coordinator Zane Lewis discussed the excellent program on KNWA.
