Teachers & Facebook: What You Should Know

We have often highlighted the social networking website Facebook on the AAE blog. Since its inception in 2004, Facebook has grown from a college photo sharing website to household name and education tool. Currently, 1 in every 13 people on Earth is using the site. With these enormous numbers, a growing percentage of teachers and students are actively using Facebook, raising questions about appropriate use, professional standards, and far-reaching school district policies.
 
Creating a School Week that Works

One of the most debated aspects of school reform has been the issue of the traditional school schedule. Last fall, President Obama made headlines for advocating for a longer school day. Others argue a year-round environment is the best fit. While everyone has an opinion about the ideal schedule, budget shortfalls have forced a number of districts to shorten their school week, raising more questions about the perfect balance between length of school day and quality programs and curriculum.
 
Calm Down the Classroom Walls

With the beginning of the school year just weeks or days away, many teachers will be returning early to set up their bulletin boards and classrooms. That is an exciting time—except that there's so much stuff to put up. In addition to organizing the room and making it inviting, teachers must put all the required teacher-made pieces in place, lest an omission be noted in a walkthrough observation.
 
A Shout Out to Hector, Arkansas

Last week involved a trip down to Arkansas for a Differentiated Instruction training in Russellville for teachers in Hector School District. We were lucky enough to hold the training at an Arkansas Tech University facility, Lakepoint Conference Center, on the banks of Lake Dardanelle. And, as usual, I was more than happy to have some real Arkansas BBQ provided by Fat Daddy's. Pulled pork is delicious, and the sides...well, I digress.
 
Harvard Study Links TFA Selection Criteria to Student Gains

According to scholars, while there is considerable variance in the productivity of teachers, educators have been unable to identify observable characteristics related to teacher effectiveness. A new study from Harvard University uses Teach for America's selection criteria to link student gains to these top-tier recruited teachers, suggesting that it's possible to recruit candidates who are more likely to become effective educators.
