Arkansas Receives Varied Rankings in Quality Counts

Education Week has ranked Arkansas sixth in the nation in education policies, environment and performance, according to state education officials. Arkansas received a grade of 81.4% in the annual “Quality Counts” report, a national report card that tracks policy and performance in six broad categories in all 50 states and Washington D.C.

Education Week
released its annual report on the state of education in the United States this week. Entitled "Quality Counts," the report awards grades to individual states for their policy and overall education performance coupled with school budgets and reform efforts. The report comes on the heels of what economists note is the end of the "Great Recession." Schools boards across the country are feeling the heat from slashed budgets and fewer resources making for a challenging year in public education.

The University of Arkansas Department of Education Reform and Arkansas State University will be sponsoring a free conference, “What Works in Arkansas: Showcasing Instructional Excellence.”

 
NYC Judge Strikes Blow to Teachers Union

In October, we reported that the New York City school system had announced plans to work with the media to publish "value-added" scores and other data from the country's largest public school system. Yesterday there was new development in the case when a Manhattan judge ruled that the city may release performance rankings to the media, denying a request by the teachers union to keep the teachers' names confidential.
 
Text Messages Top Causes of Lost Teachers Licenses in Tennessee

New technologies have completely revolutionized the way we communicate. From Facebook wall posts, to text messages and blogs, we can communicate at all times and almost anonymously. However, this new form of impersonal communication can wreak havoc in the work place, especially for teachers who work with children. A recent Associated Press report finds that more than half of Tennessee teachers who lost their teaching licenses last year were revoked for inappropriate relationships with students, mostly through text messages.
