Congress passed a federal stimulus package to help fund many programs throughout the state. Most other states receiving the same stimulus will spend the money to cover gaps in their yearly operating budgets.

According to Gov. Mike Beebe, Arkansas is forbidden to use the money to cover gaps in the budgets by the state’s constitution. “This is one of only seven states this year that’s not running a deficit,” said Beebe.

Arkansas education will receive some of the funding along with Title I schools and special education spending.

The amounts include:

  • $370.7 million for education
  • $133.8 million of Title I funds for public school students in poverty
  • $113.5 million in special education spending.

How do you think the additional education funds should be used?
